68888.0136.0000.00records (documents)Gray and Waller Packing Co Records, 1900-1940s1900-1940Scope and Content: The collection consists primarily of ledgers related to the companies operation and supples. Payments to oystermen, crabbers, and shuckers are noted by individual name. Some ledgers have widely mixed dates, which appear to be the result of "available space" ( if a particular year ledger was filled or not readily available, another year's ledger, with unused pages, was used). Contracts and agreements are also included on some ledger pages.
Additional loose materials include calculations and work sheets, (later transferred to the ledger and usually un-dated), letters from venders, shipping forms, personal letters, advertisements, government letters pertaining to requests for development of oyster grounds, and Corp of Engineers regulations.
Biographical/Historical Note: The materials in this collection were purchased at Dixon's Auction, Crumpton, Md. circa 2012. The book " Elliott's Island: the land that time forgot" ( A.M.Foley and Freddie T. Waller, 1999, Dogwood Ridge Books, Elliott, Md) notes that Gray and Waller was one of several shucking houses on the island. The book notes that the business was operated by James Prettyman Gray and his brother-in-law Thomas "Monk" Waller at the Low-er Creek from around 1917 to 1925. Foley and Waller indicate that the company was known primarily as an oyster house although records show wholesale crabmeat shipments to Baltimore. Records contained in these ledgers also show fur trapping, fish and seasonal fruit and vegetable packaging and shipments , although these appear to represent a minor endeavor compared to oysters and crabs. The Elliott's Island book provides a very limited description of this company. In 1925 Prettyman Gray attempted to sell the company to brothers Joseph, Ira, and Carl, but the sale was not completed. The book notes, "Eight years later the shucking house, long since idle, was washed out by the August Storm of 1933. Ira and Joe Gray picked up the pieces from the mouth of McCready Creek, trucked them home to Gate Point, and built I. Gray and Bro., a shucking house which em-ployed a number of local shuckers, including Phyllis Gray, Bertie Gray, Gertie Gray, and Elsie Woodland ( the ledgers include activity and payment to these and other workers). The brothers owned private oysterbeds (sic) off from Gates Point and Joe Gray owned the buyboat Lucky Lindy with which to supply the business" ( El-liott's Island, pp. 114-115).
The ledger entries end in the 1940's although the Elliott Bros. crabhouse continued under new ownership. Ches-ter and Jean Martinek ran the operation until it burned in 1962. Although Foley and Waller note the business was idle sometime during the period from 1925 to 1933, the ledgers indicate a variety of continuing operations.
4 boxesNo image URL.View
